Hyperbaric Oxygen 2003: Indications and Results - Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee Report (June 2003)

The UHMS Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Committee Report, John J. Feldmeier, D.O., Chairman and Editor.  This 2003 edition is a complete re-write of the best-selling 1999 report.  The 1999 report was hailed as the best HBO2 therapy reference ever and the 2003 report will be likewise regarded.  Dr. Feldmeier has been meticulous in his editing of this important work and presents to you an “HBO2 Bible” of therapies that work.  The several contributors have been equally meticulous with Dr. Feldmeier in reporting their findings in an easy to read format and language.  A must read for those who staff hyperbaric medicine facilities.

This book can be purchased separately for $40 or with theUHMS Guidelines for Hyperbaric Facility Operations as a set for $50.

WORKSHOPS AND OTHER REPORTS

Adjunctive Therapy for Decompression Illness.

Report of the UHMS Adjunctive Therapy Committee; including Proceedings of the 53rd UHMS Workshop.  Richard E. Moon, M.D., C.M., Chairman and Editor.  This is a comprehensive report that is a result of a partnership with the U.S. Special Operations Command’s Biomedical Initiatives Steering Committee (BISC) in searching for ways to medically treat our Special Operations Forces (SOF) when decompression incidents (DCI) threaten their lives/well being in locations remote from a treatment facility.  The study represented by the report is the first comprehensive research effort that has ever produced adjunctive therapy for Arterial Gas Embolism and Decompression Incidents that is evidenced based and endorsed by the Executive Committee of the UHMS.  It is the first report on these important subjects that adapts the American Heart guidelines for clinical efficacy and is the first guidelines for dysbaric diseases for those guidelines.  It is a significant contribution to the world’s medical literature and is a significant step forward for the international community by establishing a standard for evaluating future biomedical issues.

Reverse Dive Profiles Workshop Proceedings, ed. Lang, Lehner (Feb 2000)

Reverse Dive Profiles - Sponsored by Smithsonian, Diver Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), Divers Alert Network (DAN), American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), and Dive Training Magazine.  This exhaustive work on whether repetitive dives should be the more shallow ones is challenged.  The editors, Michael Lang of Smithsonian and Dr. Charles Lehner of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, compiled 295 pages of evidence from the world’s experts on decompression that should be a must read for divers of all ranges of experience.  Issues such as risk vs benefit of reverse dive profiles is presented in depth.  Major topics include: Physics/Physiology ; Physiology/Modeling; Dive Computers; Medical Issues; and Operational Experiences.

MISCELLANEOUS

Underwater Physiology - Ten Symposia on one CD.  (1955-2000)

These symposia began in 1955 and was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, University of Pennsylvania, and the National Academy of Science with input from the Panel on Underwater Swimmers Committee and the Committee on Undersea Warfare.  They continued periodically through 1987 and then suffered a 15-year wait until the tenth symposium, that focused on Oxygen, was held in La Jolla, California in 2002.  These symposia have been the source of thousands of references for biomedical research over the years and are considered one of a kind.  Subject matter includes, but is not limited to: Oxygen Toxicity; Inert Gas Exchange, Counter-diffusion, and Bubble Formation; Decompression Sickness, Osteonecrosis, and Other Dive-related Disorders; Circulatory and Hematologic Effects of Hyperbaric Exposure; Thermal Effects of the Hyperbaric Environment; Interactions of Ventilatory Control, :Hyperoxia, and Increased Gas Density at High Ambient Pressures; Molecular and Cellular Effects of Pressure; and Behavioral and Neurological Effects of Hyperbaric Conditions.
